Description
Raw Soil Association certified Organic and blade shorn fleeces from our own small flock of much loved Shetland and Shetland x Gotland / Boreray sheep, who are conservation grazers for our community orchards and biodiverse chalk grassland.
We blade shear each of our sheep by hand, this year (2026) we are now shearing and will list some of the best fleeces for spinners as they become available. If you are local and would like to purchase a fleece, please get in touch as we will have more fleeces available than we can list on the website. Many of our fleeces shorn early in the year have no ‘rise’ the natural weak point in the locks where the new Spring fleece grows through and the old fleece would once have broken away and shed naturally. This means you can card the fleece without causing any nepps and noils to form from the short length of wool below the rise. If you do buy a fleece which has a rise (most of our shearling fleeces which are super soft) combing works really well to separate the short and long fibres. We can also recommend our fleeces for making the most beautiful hand felted rugs or sit pads – everything from super soft and drapey shearling fleeces to more robust and rugged sit pads from the britch wool of the older sheep. All fleeces have been carefully graded and skirted.
Ivor – our super friendly 3/4 Shetland 1/4 Gotland wether. We have carefully hand selected 200g of Ivor’s finest raw locks, which have a medium crimp and staple length and a little lustre from his half Gotland father. These beautiful cream orderly locks will spin up like a dream.
Daphne – a lovely, medium crimp, slightly lustrous 3/4 Shetland 1/4 Gotland fleece from Daphne, who sheared beautifully this year, so this fleece has no rise and is relatively open but does hold together, so as you unroll you can identify the different characters of long super soft neck wool and more lustrous locks from shoulder and sides. Daphne’s Grandfather had a super fine Shetland fleece and she has inherited a low micron count from him, meaning her fleece is very soft and can be used for next to skin garments.
Betty – one of our best pure Shetland fleeces. Betty sheared beautifully this year leaving a gorgeous variegated cream / white to light grey fleece with no rise. Her fleece is very fine and spins up to make a beautifully soft yarn.
Bryn – a superfine shearling fleece from 7/8 Shetland 1/8 Gotland wether Bryn. This creamy white fleece is so soft it will make next to skin garments. There is a very small rise to some of this fleece, so for a smooth yarn process by combing, or spin straight from the lock and flick the ends. Whilst most of the fleece does not have much vegetable matter, Bryn has collected a few bits and pieces on his travels, hence the slightly lower price.
Marmaduke – this 3/4 Shetland x 1/4 Gotland fleece has so much variety from super crimpy tight locks that will make hair or gnome beards for felting, to some more open and lustrous locks that will suit spinning or felting.
Noah – this is the softest shearling fleece of this year’s clip. Definitely suitable for next to skin or baby garments, Noah’s fleece has a medium crimp and is mostly creamy white but has some light grey variegation near his neck. There is a very small rise to some of this fleece, so for a smooth yarn process by combing, or spin straight from the lock and flick the ends. Noah is 7/8 Shetland and 1/8 Gotland wether and is a very gentle friendly soul, son of Mabel and grandson of tiny Martha from whom he inherits his super soft, low micron count fleece.
Stellar – another super soft shearling fleece, also suitable for next to skin or baby garments. Stellar’s fleece has low to medium crimp (neck area medium, flanks and thighs low) and a long staple length (for her breed) of between 13 and 20cm. Most of this fleece has no rise, so can be processed by carding, combing or simply flicking the ends of the locks. Stellar is a 7/8 Shetland and 1/8 Boreray little ewe with a pretty brown face and gorgeous long locks with a matte finish that will take dye evenly. She has inherited the softness of Boreray underwool from her pure Boreray Great Grandsire but without any of the coarser hair fibres of the outercoat.
We have a policy of buying no new packaging material for use in posting out parcels, we re-use old packaging gathered from other local businesses, individuals and schools. We hope you will enjoy receiving your parcel, whatever shape and size it is, knowing that it has a little less impact on the environment.
