Description

These luxurious British made walking socks are a traditional, ribbed, ankle length sock with a cushion sole.  They are made from the fleeces of the North Devon Exmoor Bluefaced sheep. British wool is an excellent fibre for socks as its ability to absorb moisture keeps feet warm and dry. These socks are named ‘Stanbury Walkers’ after the local Lynton farmer, John Stanbury, who breeds the sheep that supply the wool.  There are three unisex sizes, small (UK shoe size 4-7), medium (8-10) and large (11-13). This listing is for size 4-7, please see other listings for larger sizes. Composition: 60% Exmoor Blueface wool / 25% British wool / 15% Nylon. The nylon content provides enough stretch to give a good fit.
The socks are knitted by a traditional, family run sock manufacturer in the UK Midlands.  The yarn from which they are knitted is spun and dyed by John Arbon at the Fibre Harvest mill in North Devon. They are then dyed by us at our small outside dye house in Oxfordshire, using well water and plant or insect dyes, many of which are grown or gathered by us in a sustainable way from the organic Estate on which we are based. When we do use imported dyes we source these directly, or from a company with a strong ethical sourcing policy.
The joy of natural dyes is the wide variety of colours, shades and tones we are able to produce. Whilst it would, in many ways be easier and more practical to batch dye and standardise our colours, we are reluctant to give up the individual and experimental and we enjoy making the results of this available to our customers. Therefore we give each colour or shade we produce a unique name and photograph it with a label, so that you can be clear about what you are buying. We name some of the classic colours that each dyestuff produces after the dyestuff itself (e.g. woad blue or madder red), other colours are named using the Pantone colour system (this occasionally causes confusion as several Pantone colours are also plant names – please contact us if you would like to know what dyestuffs have been used to create a particular colour).

Care Information
These natural fibre, unisex socks are kinder to your feet than synthetic alternatives, but this means they need a gentler wash. Arbon socks recommend they are gently hand washed and rinsed in tepid water, squeezing gently rather than wringing.  A vigorous machine wash (whatever the temperature) with too much detergent or long spin, may result in shrinkage. However, due to our busy lives or extreme laziness, we have machine washed our own pairs of these socks many times and they have been fine, we’re not offering any guarantees if you treat yours this way though! Leave to dry naturally and do not put in a tumble dryer.

We have a policy of buying no new packaging material for use in posting out parcels, we re-use old packaging gathered from other local businesses, individuals and schools. We hope you will enjoy receiving your parcel, whatever shape and size it is, knowing that it has a little less impact on the environment
